Türkiye’s UN ambassador issued a stark warning Monday that Islamophobia is spreading rapidly worldwide and has become an “uncontrolled epidemic,” affecting societies and undermining social cohesion.
Speaking at a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly marking the International Day Against Islamophobia, Ambassador Ahmet Yıldırım, representing Türkiye and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said that anti-Muslim hatred has “increased to alarming levels” across the globe.
He warned that the problem is no longer limited to isolated incidents but is increasingly embedded in public discourse and institutions. He emphasized that Islamophobia should not be framed as legitimate criticism or debate, but as prejudice, discrimination, and intolerance that violate fundamental human rights. He added that this not only harms Muslims but also threatens democratic values, the rule of law, and peaceful coexistence.
He also noted that many hate crimes go unreported or are recorded as ordinary offenses. He called on governments to maintain accurate records of such incidents and to take firm action against those responsible.
