The holy month of Ramazan has begun in Türkiye, and each city marks it with its own unique traditions. In our Ramazan Series, we turn to Istanbul, where one of the oldest customs continues to thrive — waking residents for sahur, the pre-dawn meal before fasting.

Across the city, drummers work in coordination with local neighborhood leaders (mukhtars), walking the streets and reciting traditional verses as they beat their drums. The practice dates back to the Ottoman era and remains an important part of Istanbul’s Ramazan atmosphere.

This year, around 3,000 officially authorized Ramazan drummers are serving in 961 neighborhoods. Many come from families who have carried on the tradition for generations. Unauthorized drummers are not permitted, helping preserve the order and authenticity of the custom.

More than just a wake-up call, the tradition strengthens community bonds and keeps the cultural spirit of Ramazan alive.
