The government of Nepal has imposed a curfew in the southern border city of Birgunj after protests erupted between Muslim and Hindu groups following the vandalism of a mosque in a nearby town.
Authorities in Parsa District announced on Tuesday that all public gatherings and demonstrations are banned in the city. The order warned that security forces could take strict action against anyone who violates the restrictions.
Members of the local Muslim community first took to the streets on Sunday to protest the desecration of the mosque. Hindu groups later held separate demonstrations on the same day, and protests have continued since then.
Police and armed soldiers have been deployed across the city to maintain order. Birgunj, located about 130 kilometers south of Kathmandu, is a key trade gateway between Nepal and India, through which much of the country’s fuel and other goods are imported.
According to authorities, there have been no reports of major clashes or serious injuries so far, although minor confrontations between police and protesters have been reported.
