The story of 58-year-old Turkish woman Sehergül Koç shows that it’s never too late to pursue an education.

After completing high school through distance learning, Koç—a mother of two and grandmother of three—is continuing her studies at Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University in northern Türkiye.

Koç had always wanted to get an education, but she had to leave school after middle school due to family circumstances. She later married at 19, and life soon became busy with her responsibilities.

Years later, Koç completed high school in just two and a half years while working in a factory kitchen in Kocaeli. She studied for the university entrance exam by listening to lectures through headphones while working, and in 2022, she was admitted to the Faculty of Theology at Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University.

Koç left her home in the Darıca district of Kocaeli and moved to a student dormitory in Zonguldak, where she completed a one-year preparatory program. She plans to graduate next year and then pursue a master’s degree.
